Organizing tips from your Professional Organizer to help when you are faced with sudden and unexpected situations. Here are some examples for events or situations that may challenge even organized people:
- Sudden diagnosis of illness or chronic condition
- Sudden injury or accident
- Unexpected relationship separation
- Unexpected job loss, re-engineering, downsizing
- Job promotion
- Financial emergency
- Sudden loss of significant other or family member
- Natural or man made disasters
- Theft, break-ins
Understand that sudden and unexpected events can impact your organization and time management. This is referred to as situational disorganization. Some situations are negative ones such as illness, injury, relationship separation, financial emergency. Others are positive and yet still disruptive. These might include a job promotion, an inheritance, or a faster than expected sale of your house.

If you are typically an organized person it’s even more important to try to stick to your routines and use your systems as much as possible. You may need to add or modify some, for instance:
- Create new electronic and/or paper files.
- Reschedule non-urgent appointments.
- Take a leave from a job or volunteer position.
- Arrange car pools and rides hares.
- Spend less time on non-essential leisure tasks such as watching television and engaging in social media.
- Delegate more.
- Buy healthy but prepared foods.
- Hire professional services: professional organizer, driver, housekeeper, concierge services.
Maintenance | What not to do
- Self care including adequate sleep, massage, healthy food choices, drinking fluids, exercise, taking supplements and medications.
- Relaxing, rejuvenating activities especially those that allow you to spend time in nature; practicing meditation, yoga, reading for escape, listening to music and other creative activities.
- Maintain social contact with supportive family and friends.
Often under stressful situations people will succumb to the stress and forget to take care of themselves. Caregiver burnout is well documented. It’s important to find ways to practice self care, as in the analogy of putting your oxygen mask on first!
