Situational disorganization is generally defined as a temporary state of disorganization caused by a disruptive event. You’ve likely heard, read, or said some or all of the clichés such as, “life is unpredictable”, “nothing is in your control”, “stuff happens”, or “the only thing that’s guaranteed is death and taxes”. In the HGTV article entitled, “5 Culprits of Disorganization” Vicki Norris defines 5 types of disorganization:
Situational disorganization can happen to greater or lesser degrees for those of us who are typically organized. For instance, as a Personal Professional Organizer I work with bright, competent and accomplished individuals who find themselves surprised and frustrated when their usual feeling of organization is challenged. It is especially stressful when the systems and what they were doing before no longer works for them in this new situation.
3 aspects of situational disorganization:
There are 3 specific aspect of situational disorganization including the types of situations that cause the disorganization, the various reasons for situational disorganization, and the solutions for managing the disorganization.
Types of situations – some situations occur suddenly and are unexpected. This can create havoc in physical and emotional ways. Other situations are expected but we are unprepared for the event(s).
Reasons for disorganization – everyone responds differently to major life transitions. Not all transitions are negative, for instance marriage, birth of a child, retirement, moving to a larger house. Solutions for situational disorganization – Solutions fall into 1 of 2 categories. Solutions are either proactive or reactive. Proactive solutions are the plans and preparation that can be put into place before a situation occurs. For example, having an emergency preparation kit on hand in your home, or having scanned copies of important documents in a cloud-based application. Reactive solutions might include hiring professional service providers such as mold remediation, movers, or renting a storage unit for the short term.
