You look into your closet…you stare at your clothes…you wear the same old things. Is this your daily dilemma? Want to learn how to update your wardrobe and image? Here are the 6 commitments you will need to make: #1: I will let go of out-of-style clothing. Ex.: suit jackets with shoulder pads, mini skirts, pleated pants, holiday cardigans, etc. #2: I will invest in well fitting undergarments. #3: I will donate or consign clothing that doesn’t fit the body I am in today. Ex.: the clothes I am waiting to wear when I lose those last 10 pounds. #4: I will ask a friend or professional for an honest assessment of what clothing flatters my body type. #5: I will only wear clothing that is flattering and comfortable. #6: My wardrobe will express my personality and lifestyle. As a Professional Organizer and Image/Wardrobe Consultant I love using lists for all sorts of things. Try making a list of how to (re-)organize your closet. If you like it, use it. If you need ideas about how to approach this task check out this one from “Real Simple”: http://www.realsimple.com/home-organizing/organizing/closets/clothes-closet-organizing-checklist-00000000002177/index.html
The end of the season is always a good time to (re-)organize your closet. Outside In Organizer and Makeovers wants you to be able to SEE and WEAR everything you own. The best ways to do that is to: #1: Get rid of anything you don’t love, isn’t flattering, haven’t worn in more than a year. (It’s okay, our bodies change.) #2: Clean, mend anything that you are keeping so it is ready to wear. (In San Diego we get a lot of freeway dust and mold.) #3: Organize your clothing so you can put together outfits together easily. (This can be by item, color, etc.) #4: Use it or lose it! Use this tip (thanks Peter Walsh)…turn all of the hangers backwards. After each time you wear an item put it back in and face the hanger the correct way. At the end of the season, let go of all of the items that are still on backwards hangers!
Outside In Organizer and Makeovers knows that you’ll get compliments when you wear complementary colors! Don’t be afraid to hire an Image Consultant to provide expert and objective advice about how to shop and mix colors. You’ll love what it does to lift your spirits. TIP: Go into the dressing room and just experiment with mixing complementary colors…have fun with it.
Color, color, color! It doesn’t matter what size, weight, height or age you are there is nothing that perks up an image like the right color. That goes for men, too! What’s your best color?
Spring is officially here and it’s time to tend to your closet. Here are some of Outside In Organizer & Makeovers’ favorite tips: Take everything out and separate by clothing category: tops, bottoms, etc. Do a quick sort – discards, donates, consignments, repairs & alterations. Do a thorough cleaning – vacuum, dust; use cedar blocks, Damp Rid, etc. Invest in a set of hangers that match and use as little space as possible. Decide on your best system BEFORE items go back in the closet. Do you prefer to sort by color, outfits, clothing category, or some combination of those? Don’t forget to use supplies that make things easier to reach and see. Examples: clear shoe boxes, a collapsible step stool, adhesive hooks for belts, etc. Have fun and enjoy the space you’ve created!
Not everyone can afford to buy a whole new wardrobe. Start with the basics and look at the clothes in your closet: Make sure they’re clean; remove any stains. Make sure they’re pressed – either by you, or professionally. Take care of repairs & alterations; replace missing buttons, alter hems, etc. Don’t forget to donate or consign clothing that doesn’t fit. There is no excuse not to look good if you address the basics! The Outside In Organization & Makeovers approach starts with wearing what looks good on today’s body.
