Having your basic pieces in neutrals such as white, black, grey, beige, etc. are the perfect way to start to expand your wardrobe. Not only can you add colors, but you can add prints, mix fabric textures, and don’t forget to mix the neutrals, too! This one is a great khaki jacket, print top, and white crop pants. The blue in the print top picks up the eye color but wait…I’d add a bright orange purse, black sandals, and wood jewelry pieces! How to mix it up: 1. Wear the same tops with bright blue jeans and heels. 2. Wear the print top and white crop pants with a black sweater. 3. Look for pieces you already have: a skirt, a jean jacket, etc. You get the idea, have fun with it.
Sound familiar? For some people the very idea of letting go of an item is very difficult and even emotional. As an Organizer I often hear my clients thank me for helping by “giving permission” to donate or discard things. Sometimes it’s compassionate coaching, and using guiding questions to help the client make the decision. Other times it’s tough love… setting up rules or parameters for what stays and what goes! The beauty of the process and working together is when the noticeable shift occurs and once the client sees and literally feels less burdened by their stuff, they use that new energy and momentum to continue the process even when I am not there with them! I love it and so do they.
One of the many reasons why I love being an Organizer is that I can show my clients simple to use strategies to organize their lives. The Outside In Organizer and Makeovers approach looks at what is behind (or under) the problem. Not enough space? Eliminate clutter. Contain smaller items. Store items near the place they’re used. Not enough time? Audit your schedule for a full week. Look at how you spend your time. What can be eliminated? Shared? Delegated? Nothing to wear? Take everything out of your closet. Donate items that you haven’t worn in a year or more. Reorganize your closet by grouping your clothes in outfits rather than categories.
Not everyone can afford to buy a whole new wardrobe. Start with the basics and look at the clothes in your closet: Make sure they’re clean; remove any stains. Make sure they’re pressed – either by you, or professionally. Take care of repairs & alterations; replace missing buttons, alter hems, etc. Don’t forget to donate or consign clothing that doesn’t fit. There is no excuse not to look good if you address the basics! The Outside In Organization & Makeovers approach starts with wearing what looks good on today’s body.
