According to the dictionary, image is defined as: “a representation of the external form of a person or thing in art”. Key word #1: representation. Does your image represent your true self? If not, imagine how it might that affect your confidence, personal interactions, or professional relationships. You only get one chance to make a first impression, why not make it a positive one? Notice how people react to you when you wear the “right” color, for instance. More importantly, observe how you feel and behave when you feel good about the way that you look. Key word #2: external. How you look, what you wear, your stance, etc. are no substitute for the more important things such as your health, well-being, and education. There is a synergy between the external and internal that can be very positive. For instance, we all know that even if you work from home you need to get up and get dressed as if you are going to the office. It’s no substitute for time management but you are more likely to be in a productive mindset if you act as if you are going to work! A skilled image consultant can help you analyze what is working and what is not working. It’s about becoming your best self and enhancing your strengths. Let your external representation illuminate your inner radiance!
How are you doing with your resolutions so far? Don’t be too hard on yourself (or surprised) when only 10 days into the year you find yourself off track. Rather than starting ambitious resolutions on a specific date you might think about what I call, “Creating Optimal Habits”. What that means is focusing on 1 behavior that you want to change and practice it in simple steps every day. Some days will be easier than others, the key is to persist. Here are some examples, ideas, and suggestions: Time Management Optimal Habit: Commit to spending 15 minutes at the end of every work day to review what you accomplished that day, and what you need to do for the next 2 days. You will always be prepared! Organizing Optimal Habit: Commit to making quick decisions (3 seconds or less) for actions such as keep, file, recycle, shred, discard. Take action 1 paper or item at a time. You will avoid clutter and wasted time! Image Updating Optimal Habit: Commit to wearing items that fit you in the body you are in today, every day. If you put something on that is too tight, loose, short, etc. take it off immediately and put it in a donation or consignment bag.
There is no time like now to update your image. Why wait to…lose weight, get in shape, get a new job, start dating, and so on? Image is more than what you wear. Your image is the outside, that projects your inside. The two must be aligned but sometimes it takes immediate reinforcement and quick results to motivate the long term changes. Here are aspects of image that I want you to consider: Health – physical and emotional well being and strength Confidence – how you view yourself and the ways that you want to project that view Appearance – posture, wardrobe, establishing your unique style What would you most like to work on this year? Recruit help to ensure that will happen. You don’t need a lot of money, here are some examples: Health – want to start walking? Recruit a walking partner. Want to learn how to practice yoga? Download an app. Confidence – is it time to work on your presentation or interview skills? Join Toastmasters. Attend a SCORE seminar. Appearance – do you lack a style that suits your best self? Browse store mannequins, take photos of the ones you like. Pour over fashion magazines and make notes about the styles that suit the body you’re in today Need a professional image consultant? Look no further!
Do you have a closet full of clothes but tend to wear the same items and outfits most of the time? Try these strategies for wearing all of your clothes in new ways! Purge those items you know that you will never wear, or will never fit. Decide how you want to organize your closet: by color? Sleeve length? By outfit? Re-organize the clothing accordingly. Hang an accessory that you haven’t worn recently over the hanger with an outfit. Enjoy that scarf or necklace and create a new outfit. Do the same with shoes. Now, turn every hanger backwards and each time you wear a garment, rehang the item correctly. At the end of the season, donate or consign everything that is still hanging the wrong way.
I love helping women shop in their own closet, creating new outfits from clothing they already own (and hopefully like). This lovely woman couldn’t decide if she wanted keep the sweater or skirt. In working with her I learned that she wanted an all white wardrobe and so, we put her pieces together with a great belt. She looked fantastic and was so happy.
The easiest way to create an outfit is to being at the bottom…pants or a skirt. The right fit is essential so that you are comfortable. Then, focus on the top(s). Depending upon the occasion you may want to layer a top under a sweater or jacket. Avoid the “matchy matchy” and think about these options: Use complementary colors. Mix textures. Vary patterns such as stripes under plaid. Skip the jewelry and wear something with an embellishment.
A few simple changes will give you a new, more polished look! Update your eyeglass frames next time you get your eyes checked. Try on wigs to see what a new style might look like. Bring an honest friend along. Add a little color with blush and tinted lip gloss. Send me your photo for more personalized ideas!
The end of the season is always a good time to (re-)organize your closet. Outside In Organizer and Makeovers wants you to be able to SEE and WEAR everything you own. The best ways to do that is to: #1: Get rid of anything you don’t love, isn’t flattering, haven’t worn in more than a year. (It’s okay, our bodies change.) #2: Clean, mend anything that you are keeping so it is ready to wear. (In San Diego we get a lot of freeway dust and mold.) #3: Organize your clothing so you can put together outfits together easily. (This can be by item, color, etc.) #4: Use it or lose it! Use this tip (thanks Peter Walsh)…turn all of the hangers backwards. After each time you wear an item put it back in and face the hanger the correct way. At the end of the season, let go of all of the items that are still on backwards hangers!
No one has the perfect body, just ask the beautiful models we see in magazines and they’ll find something to criticize about themselves! So stop waiting for perfection and embrace your shape today. You are already perfect! You can enhance your image and update your look in simple, inexpensive ways. Here are a few tips from Outside In Organizer and Makeovers that you can choose from right now: #1: Donate the clothes that no longer make you look your best. These are items that are too big, too tight, the wrong color, etc. #2: If you are partial to neutrals, expand your definition of “neutral” to include gray, navy, brown…have fun mixing them. FYI-wearing black doesn’t hide a thing! #3: Use a “POP” of color or a metallic to spruce up an outfit. Try this with an accessory or pair of shoes. #4: Emphasize the features that you like best. That might include a bold lipstick for the shape of your lips. Use details like seaming or embellishments to draw the eye towards those features. #5: Wear clothing that fits. Baggy clothes only make you look baggy, really! Have fun with these tips. You’ll look better on the outside and it will make you feel better inside.
Travel should be easy and fun. If it is business-related, then easy and productive! I hate doing laundry when I travel almost as much as I hate packing too much. One of the ways to deal with this challenge is to invest in a collection of quick drying undergarments. They can be hand washed and dry in no time, no matter where you travel. Here are links to items for men and women:
