There are some basic tips for getting started that are easy to implement: TIP 1: Get rid of all clothing that is stained & torn. TIP 2: Get rid of all clothing that you have not worn in more than two (2) years. TIP 3: Get rid of clothing that does not fit you now…too tight, too loose, too short, etc.
If you are asking, “Do I need a makeover?” that means that the idea has already crossed your mind and that you are open to the process. That’s great! Everyone – men and women – can benefit from a makeover. The Outside In Approach knows that helping you make the right choices about how you present yourself outwardly will inspire positive benefits internally. When was the last time that you smiled at yourself in the mirror? Walked into a room of strangers with confidence?
Men want to look great during the holidays, too. The basics are no different for you guys: 1. FIT: The biggest mistake that men make is wearing clothes that don’t fit well. That means that pants should be comfortable around the waist and jackets can button without gapping. Find a good tailor and let them alter items as needed. 2. COLOR: Don’t be afraid of bold colors. Go into a great men’s department and let the salesperson choose colors that will complement your skin tone and hair color. Take mental notes and then leave (unless you can’t resist the item). After you absorb that change and are ready to purchase find a shirt, tie, or sweater in one of those colors and keep the rest of your outfit neutral. NOTE: Listen for compliments! 3. TEXTURE: If you’re not ready for bold colors you can experiment with textures. Add a tweed sports coat to a pair of jeans. Wear a cashmere vest with khaki pants. If you’re really bold, try shoes with a shine to spruce up a casual pair of pants.
Spend less and get more? Add the pizazz factor! Scarves and pashminas can change an outfit. You can wear them in various ways over almost any top. Don’t have time to buy new clothes? Try wearing trendy tights with zig zag or fish net lines. Wear a simple pencil skirt, classic blouse, put on those tights with heels or boots and watch that outfit pop. Accessories can change an outfit, don’t limit yourself, be creative. Wear a vintage satin evening bag with a casual outfit. Send me your ideas and questions…
We touched on wearing a wide leg jean, pant or trouser to create a slimming effect for the right body type. Now pull out the tops in your closet and drawers and think in layers. Here’s how to start: 1. Wear a shape enhancing undergarment, if needed. 2. Try a camisole or clingy, sheer (tee or long sleeve) shirt to wear as a basic garment. 3. Layer with any of the following: a jacket, vest, or sweater. Consider leaving some of the top, or all of the buttons unbuttoned. This will create a more narrow waistline. If you are thick waisted, button under the bustline and leave the bottom buttons unbuttoned to create a flair at the hip…similar visual effect. It’s important to steer clear of trends that do not enhance your body type or facial structure. Luckily there are lots of wide leg jean, pants, and trouser options again (very few women and men actually look good in skinny jeans and pants). The wide legs create a slimming illusion for people with real hips and rears by elongating the line of the body. I like to remind my female clients that before anything happens with organizing your wardrobe you need to start with the essentials. That’s right: supportive, well-fitting undergarments. They don’t have to be matronly or boring either. Check out this new Spanx product: http://www.realsimple.com/beauty-fashion/shoes-accessories/lingerie-hosiery/patterned-tights-00100000067878/index.html?xid=df-10-13-2011 Benefits of wearing the essentials? Confidence: Your clothes will fit better and enhance your image. Money saving: Items that you thought didn’t like good might in fact look great. Now you don’t have to replace that item.
Men and women need to take stock of how their wardrobe is working for them. Here are some of the reasons and benefits for why clients want to organize their wardrobes: “I have nothing to wear.” It’s unlikely that you have nothing to wear but one of the benefits of organizing is to find items you haven’t worn in awhile. “I’m so tired of wearing the same old things.” Reviewing your wardrobe is an opportunity to create new ways to mix and match clothing that you haven’t worn together. “I don’t have a big budget to start buying a new wardrobe.” Once you’ve taken stock of the items that you want to keep you can easily update your current wardrobe with a few key items of clothing and accessories. This is an affordable way to expand your wardrobe in a more methodical way. “Nothing fits…” Maybe you’ve lost or gained weight but the best wardrobe is one that fits your current body. Fit doesn’t just mean you can wear it comfortably, it also means that it enhances your physique, lifestyle and personality. Consider alterations and using a great seamstress or tailor to make reasonable changes. Sometimes the answer is wearing the right undergarments (bras with support, shapers, etc.). Another consideration you are wearing the item…tucked in versus not, shoe with heels or a flat, belted, layered, and so on. By enhancing your wardrobe through simple organizing principles you will end up looking more like you want to, feeling more confident, and presenting your best self!
Outside In Organizer & Makeovers suggest these initial steps for successful organizing: Step One: Identify your goal(s)…why do you want to organize your wardrobe? Step Two: What and who will you need to get this done in the most efficient manner? Step Three: Schedule adequate and uninterrupted time so that you can focus and enjoy the process.
