Accessories are critical elements of a wardrobe. Want some advice? Create a wardrobe of classic pieces of clothing. Use trendy accessories to add variety and update your wardrobe. It’s a more practical and budget-conscious approach to keeping your wardrobe fresh and your style current. Here are some tips for organizing your accessories wardrobe: Jewelry: A few pieces of “good” jewelry go a long way. Now more than ever there are some beautiful, inexpensive pieces of costume jewelry available. Don’t be afraid to mix and match costume and “good” jewelry. Just like clothing, think outside of the box rather than matching everything. You can mix metals such as gold and silver, or wear a bold color that complements but isn’t a major player in the outfit…let it pop! Most important, remember that less is more. If you are wearing a low neckline, consider leaving it bare (no necklace) and wearing big drop earrings or hoops. Conversely, if you’re wearing strands of chains and faux pearls keep your earrings simple, wear studs CZs are just fine). Scarves: Scarves can be work all year round by varying the fabrics. Discount retailers are loaded with great scarves. Keep your summer scarves light and gauzy. Ask a salesperson to teach you at least 2 different ways to wear the same scarf, different ways to tie them, and hang them in different directions. Go ahead and wear more than 1 scarf at a time. You can twist them to wear as if they’re one, or wear one higher and tighter around the neck while the other one drapes about the shoulders. The key with scarves is playing with textures, colors, patterns, weaves, and so on. Go trendy and try wearing something bold with a casual outfit to dress it up; venture into fringes, glittery threads, or fastening the scarf… read more →
Know matter where you live the changing season is a great motivating force for organizing your wardrobe. Even here in perfect San Diego we do have a change of seasons! As a Professional Organizer and Wardrobe Consultant I know that these are challenging times economically for many people. This is all the more reason to look for budget-conscious ways to enhance your wardrobe. Here are some TIPS that I hope you will find helpful: Assess your wardrobe. Take everything out of your closet and lay it out on the bed so that you can view individual pieces. Tip: Keep anything that fits you now, that you love because it looks good on you now, and that is in good condition. Set those pieces to the side.Tip: Let go of anything that no longer fits, that doesn’t enhance the body you are currently in, and that you no longer love…donate the items that are in good condition or sell them at a consignment shop. Tip: The last step in this sorting process is to discard clothing that is too worn, torn, moth-eaten, etc. Do that immediately so that you can move on to the next step: Creating and updating your wardrobe.
Spring cleaning…closet organizing…wardrobe makeover. Organizing is a process, you don’t do it once and it’s done, right? I love to help people shop in their own closets, mix and match what they already own, and update their wardrobe with new pieces or accessories. You don’t need to get rid of everything. Start by taking EVERYTHING out of your closet and laying it out nearby. Put anything that you are willing to let go of in a bag for donations, consignment sales, etc. Place anything that needs cleaning or alterations in another bag, and put that in your car immediately. Before you reorganize the items and put them back in your closet, take stock of what you have…do you love it? Does it make you look terrific today? Would adding a new jacket or scarf in a bold color make it look like a new outfit? What about a trendy bangle bracelet, new sandals, or a cute straw bag? Send me your photo and I’ll give you some ideas!
You will be less stressed if you are able to find things easily in your closets. That means, using a system that works for you and your lifestyle. Some people like to group their clothing by color. Other ways to organize would be according to type of function: casual, work & professional, dressy & formal and so on. There is no right or wrong way as long as it works for you. The best way to start is simply schedule time to do this, first. When you get started make sure that you have the following: 1. space to lay your closet contents out so that you can see everything, designate an area for only those items that you are keeping, 2. one container or bag for items that need to be discarded, one for donations, and one for laundering, repairs or alterations, 3. a bag for dry cleaning hangers…return them to the cleaner they can be reused, 4. a container or bin for skirt, pant hangers, and one for dress, top hangers, 5. a vacuum cleaner to get into those exposed nooks and crannies. Take a group of items out at a time, immediately sorting each one. TIPS: ** If it doesn’t fit now and hasn’t in the past year…donate. ** If you have multiple versions of the same item such as jeans or tee shirts, discard the dated, torn, and faded ones. ** If you still love it and you still wear it, keep it. Remember to ask yourself, “does it make the body that I have today look good?” One way to be objective about making this decision is to recall if you feel great when you wear it, and if you receive compliments when you wear it!
