Organize Your Wardrobe There are 4 ways to organize your wardrobe. Let’s focus on organizing your clothing, not your closet. The benefits of organizing your wardrobe are: Expand your wardrobe selections. Make getting dressed easier and save time. Wear more of the items that you own. Increase your creativity instead of wearing the same things, the same way. As your San Diego Personal Organizer and Image Consultant I love to share men’s and women’s wardrobe tips. There are easy ways to help you update your wardrobe and create outfits with the clothes that you already have! I am talking about sorting and organizing the contents of your closet and drawers, not how you store and where you locate the items. 4 Ways to Organize Your Wardrobe: Color: Organizing your clothes by color can help you to find new ways to use color. Find new ways to use color t0 rather than simply matching colors or combine a color with a neutral. You can think about wearing complementary colors, all neutrals for a sophisticated and monochromatic look, and adding a pop of color to update your style as well. Category: Most people prefer to organize their wardrobe by grouping like items with like items. That means putting all pants, tops, etc. together with one another. This way makes sense and can be efficient but doesn’t necessarily enhance creativity (see #4). Length: Organizing by length can make dressing easier when changes in temperature are a consideration. You can order your clothing from sleeveless to long sleeve, shorter skirts/dresses to long, and jackets to coats. Outfit: My favorite way to organize your wardrobe is the organize your clothing by outfits. This is the best way to expand your style and wardrobe. It also makes it easy to make choices for travel! Wardrobe and Image Makeover You know what makes me the happiest? When I show a woman how to Shop in Her Closet © and dress for the body she is in today. She gazes at her reflection in the mirror with the widest smile and says, “I never thought that I would look good in this.” Yes, that makes me want to do a happy dance. Here are just some of the benefits of working with me, your San Diego Wardrobe and Image Consultant: • Save money – by creating new outfits from your current wardrobe and how to accessorize them. • Enhance your body type – by learning which styles, cuts, patterns, textures and colors are right styles for the body you are in today. • Elevate your self confidence – in the way that you present yourself in personal and professional environments. Let’s look at a few examples of how some of my clients used to limit their views of themselves and their wardrobe possibilities… Shirley’s story: We were organizing clothing to determine which ones she might keep and which she would let go of. Shirley thought that the leather pants that she wore when she was first married were no longer “appropriate” for her to wear. After all, she was now the mother of two children and her body was changed. As a Wardrobe and Image Consultant it is my responsibility to allow the client to see possibilities that enable her to make the decision comfortably. I asked Shirley to try on the pants…they fit perfectly and I think that she was surprised. I showed her several ways that she could create outfits for casual and dressier occasions by combining different tops, shoes, boots and accessories. She looked fabulous in every combination and best of all, everything… read more →
Working as a Personal Wardrobe Consultant is very gratifying… Clients smile at themselves in the mirror, and as we expand their wardrobe clients tell me, “I would never have thought about putting these (clothing) together.” I see them relax and become more playful in their walk, and they tend to stand up a little straighter. We spend 3 or more hours together each time creating outfits from their closet and they never seem to tire. In between sessions they send me photos of the outfits that they put together using the Women’s Wardrobe Tips and Mens’ Wardrobe Tips that they learned from me. The benefits of hiring a Personal Wardrobe Consultant include: How to update your wardrobe Ways to use color Organizing your clothing Some people, men and women alike, might see working with a Personal Wardrobe Consultant as a luxury. For example, compare what it would cost you to purchase 15 or more new outfits with the number of outfits you learn to build from your current wardrobe! You also learn which items to consign so that you get the benefit of sales, and which to do donate (tax benefit). It’s difficult to put a specific value on the benefit of this mood -boosting and confidence -building that results from wardrobe and image consulting. It’s not only about the confidence you feel when you look great in new outfits. It’s about empowering my clients to learn how to create the outfits and shop when I am not with them! So let’s get those clothes out of your closet and start shopping!
Wardrobe Consulting Tips | How To Create Outfits As a Wardrobe and Image Consultant I share tips for how to expand your wardrobe by creating “new” outfits from the same basic pieces. Wardrobe Consulting Tip #1: Just because you bought a suit doesn’t mean that you always have to wear the top and bottom together. You can wear them as separates and mix them with other pieces. By doing this you can make a business or dressy outfit more casual and therefore, get more wear out of it. Wardrobe Consulting Tip #2: Wear a jean jacket with a dress or skirt to transform the entire outfit and give it a more casual look. Add a suit jacket or silk blouse to a dress jean and you are date-ready! Be creative and mix fabrics, textures, and patterns. Wardrobe Consulting Tip #3: Mix neutrals! That’s right, go beyond black and white. For example, these combinations look fabulous: black with brown, navy with grey, grey with black. Some of these ideas may be radical for you but trust me, you will love the results simply by changing pieces and wearing different accessories. Let’s look at how I did this with a lovely red dress, for example. In a previous post I accessorized the same dress for an evening event. This time I want to show you how you can “casual-ize” it and wear it in a completely different way! Here’s my Wardrobe Consultant magic at work… Step 1: Your basic gorgeous dress. Step 2: Go casual with a black leather jacket. Step 3: Add a pair of great knee high boots. Step 4: Accessorize with an edgier look. Step 5: A tote bag finishes this evening to day look.
The 5 key elements you can use to learn how to create outfits: As a Wardrobe and Image Consultant with clients from San Diego to the east coast, I love to show women how to create outfits to expand their wardrobe, and update their look. You can do this with a “Shop In Your Closet” session or with a consultant in person. The holiday season will be here before you know it and in this post I’m going to show you how to easily create your outfit and look fabulous by using 5 key elements. (Look for the same dress and another version of an outfit in my next post.) Remember, that if you can’t hire an in-person consultant you can get help via phone, Skype and signing up to have me create your very own Pinterest boards! Organizing your clothing around these key elements makes dressing and creating your look so simple… Start with a basic dress – figure flattering, the way to use color is with something like this stunning red (keep everything else neutral), wear a comfortable length, make sure it’s easy to dress up or dress down (I call that “casual-izing”) Add a wrap – stay comfortable in all climates; can be worn around the neck when you want to be more hands-free Accessorize with a clutch – that’s fun, dressy, and has a shoulder strap option as well Wear a drop earring – that looks great with any length haircut and makes enough of a statement to add just enough jewelry and not too much (don’t compete with the dress) Beautiful shoe – comfortable height for standing all night Remember that less is more. The dress is the foundation of the outfit and the accessories complement without competing for attention.
Does any of this sound familiar? I waste so much time trying to figure out what to wear in the morning. I end up wearing the same top and bottom each time. My wardrobe is basically two or three colors. Everything goes with black, right? There is only one way to organize your wardrobe and closet…the way that works best for you! Sometimes my clients love their clothes and actually have a lot of items, but their complaint is that they don’t know how to expand their wardrobe and create multiple outfits. Out of boredom or frustration men and women end up wearing the same things repeatedly. Recently, I worked with someone and together we created 54 outfits from less than half of the items in her closet. During one of my “Shop In Your Closet” sessions she didn’t have to purchase one new thing and found 54 new outfits!! You can organize your wardrobe using one basic rule…it’s my “3-to-1 rule”. For every bottom (pant, skirt, jeans) you create 3 different options for tops (jacket, shirt, sweater). You can now organize these combinations in your closet so that you don’t have to recreate them from scratch. There’s no rule that says we have to organize our clothes by color or item (all the sleeveless, tee shirts, etc. together). Do the same thing with accessories, too. You can group the ties, belts, scarves, etc. with those outfits and hang them together. You’ll save so much time, feel and look great, and oh yeah, the compliments will start rolling in, too. Have fun with it.
I was reading something this morning entitled, “Treating Yourself Well” and it reminded me of why I include image and wardrobe consulting in my professional organizing services. My mission is to help busy individuals streamline their lives so that they make room for what is important to them. This includes being able to create and enhance your individual style. Why is that important? It makes sense to me that while we are striving for efficiency, promotions, the right partner, and simply to be the best person that we can be we deserve to: Feel our best, most confident self inside and out. Project our best self in how we move throughout the day. Share our unique gifts and strengths with everyone we interact with. My Outside In Approach is not about helping you figure out what to wear so that others will like the way that you look. What excites me is when I see a client look at his or her reflection in the mirror and smile, stand up straighter, and say things like “I never would have tried this on!”, or “My gosh, that is so me! Thank you.” I can see your beauty, star quality, and how to bring that forth no matter what you are putting in the way. Yes, confidence comes from the inside but the synergy between external and internal factors is very powerful and motivating. Yes, it really is all about you! The perfect time to identify your style and align your image and wardrobe with what you want for yourself is always NOW. You don’t have to wait for the kids to grow up, or to lose five more pounds. Look your best every day, in the body that you’re in today!
As an Image and Wardrobe Consultant in San Diego I know that not everyone will go shopping with me. But that won’t keep me from sharing these tips! Think of me as your virtual consultant… Designers – find the brands and designers who create clothing that fits your body well. Build your wardrobe around those designers. Classic pieces – consider investing more in well constructed pieces that can be worn for several seasons. Trends – don’t be afraid of trends; spend less on those types of items. Accessorizing – have fun with it, be bold, and remember that less IS more. Color – if you absolutely love a color that doesn’t necessarily compliment your skin and hair color, wear it on the lower half of your body or as an accessory (shoe, bag). Metallic – these are still in style and like accessories…less is more. Alterations – a good seamstress is your friend! Make sure that your clothing fits the most challenging part of your body and then alter the item, as needed.
Style is not dependent upon your age, body type, occupation or income. You know a man has style when he exudes confidence from the inside out, as well as the outside in! You only get one chance to make a first impression! Consider the benefits of looking your best for every occasion. Clothes that fit well look better. Current styles say, you care. A little splash of color is great, too. An Image Consultant can help you build a basic wardrobe or enhance your current wardrobe. There are great times to consider working with an Image and Wardrobe Consultant: Career or job change Retirement Interview Starting to date (again) Change of season Special occasion Vacation Now! You can check out examples of different styles on my Pinterest board:http://www.pinterest.com/deniseimage/male-styles/
You don’t have to be a designer to know how to look your best. In fact, you don’t have to spend a lot of money either. Check out 1 of my new Pinterest boards for some ideas: http://www.pinterest.com/deniseimage/mens-casual/ Here are the basics: Go through everything in your closet and dresser and get rid of: worn, stained, ill-fitting items. You deserve only the best! Do the same with your ties, shoes, boots and belts. Take anything that needs altering, repairs, polishing, etc. to the cleaner or shoe repair shop immediately. Donate any item that is in good condition and that you no longer wear. For instance, work suits or winter jackets that you no longer need. Take some time to go to the men’s department in several stores. Check out what is currently in style, the fit, colors and details. Consider what you will be comfortable purchasing to update your wardrobe. If you don’t like shopping, browse men’s fashion magazines and ask your partner, friend, or a professional to shop for you! TIP: turn all of the hangers for the items that you are keeping the “wrong” way. After you wear something, place it back in the closet with the hanger facing the correct direction. At the end of the season you will see what you don’t wear and can donate!
