Managing time is the 1 skill set you want to develop and refine regardless of whether you are a student, working or retired.  Time management and 29 Ways to Be Generous With Your Time. All month I have been sharing easy to tips for managing time and ways to be more generous with it. Time management is about self care, productivity, and being available to others. If you think about how it makes you and others feel when you have time for them it makes sense to focus on managing  time. Whether your goal is to save time, do more, or to create more work-life balance make sure that you take advantage of these tips. Save some time to let me know which ones worked best for you and your time management system. Here are this month’s last 6 time management tips. Use them generously!

Managing time to be generous can happen in creative ways. For instance:

Carpool – That of course depends upon the frequency, distance and time of day. The time management benefit is that on the days that you are not driving you can get things done in the car as a passenger (or not). Perhaps you want to join a carpool for your kids to and/or from school. That will help in managing time and saving the non-driving days for uninterrupted work, projects, or errands.

 

Coffee – Buy the person in line behind you a cup of coffee. This will take at the most, an extra 2 minutes to pay a little extra to the cashier. You don’t even have to wait to tell the person behind you, shh. This act of generosity takes little or no time and even if you did it only once a year it would just be such a good use of your time.

Tip extra – Remember that when a person provides you with service you are tipping someone’s daughter, son, mother, etc. It only takes an extra 10-15 seconds to leave a little extra. The good feeling that you will walk away with will last much longer.

Write a note – Take a little time to write a special note or make a positive comment on the merchant copy of your receipt. In just 15 seconds you could say something specific that you appreciated. Sometimes when it’s a big group that a server waits on I’ll write “thank you for your patience”. Let them know that you noticed.

Pay a bill – If you took just about 15 seconds to write a thank you note in the memo on a check that you send it would likely brighten someone’s day. Even when I pay online there are some platforms that allow you to write a note. Let’s make it personal.

Managing time | Slow down

If you feel like you are always rushing and still not getting enough done it is time to slow down. That means making time to reassess; take stock of your priorities, what you are and aren’t getting done. Maybe your expectations for yourself are not realistic. It’s not uncommon for people to have chronic obstacles such as:

  • Time estimation – Underestimating how long it takes to get things done.
  • Setting boundaries – Learning to say “no” or “not now” can be a useful skill.
  • Multitasking – Consider whether you are compromising accuracy or enjoyment by trying to do more than one thing at a time.

Time management tips can be used to push the reset button and create new habits. I call these “Optimal Habits” © because they have a positive effect on you from the outside in and the inside out.
